Simon O’Rafferty, Senior Research Officer of EDC was invited to contribute an article for the spring edition of Networks magazine. Networks is one of the various publications issue by the Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Art, Design and Media (ADM-HEA). The magazine is published three times per year.
The ADM-HEA is based at Brighton University and was established in 2000. Its role is to work with people in further and higher education institutions, subject associations and professional bodies to “explore and identify opportunities to develop effective practices in learning and teaching in art, design and media”.
For the spring edition, Networks had a special focus on the theme of sustainability. The magazine showcased some of the sustainability issues that higher education art, design and media are currently facing and provided examples of individuals and organisations that are currently working on finding responses to those.
Simon’s article is titled ‘Mainstreaming ecodesign: A Welsh Perspective’. The piece was split between two main topics. Firstly, Simon explained how the role of design education in the UK is changing due to the evolving role of the designer in society and industry. He stated that the skills and knowledge that professional designers require are increasingly trans-disciplinary and diverse and need to be reflected in design education and training. Subsequently, Simon gave a retrospective look at the work EDC has been doing with the course leaders from the four universities in Wales offering product design degrees. EDC’s capacity building for ecodesign education approach was highlighted.
