EDC were delighted to get an invite to participate in the Invisible Boundaries 24 Hour Design Challenge organised by the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in February 2009.
Along with Frank O’Connor and Simon O'Rafferty other speakers included Ursula Tischner, econcept and Christer Lidzélius, KaosPilots.
The event included a series of keynote presentations from the 7 invited speakers to inspire, set the context and challenges. This was followed by the formation of 6 teams, all given different colors, which were given the task of addressing the challenges, presenting back their findings at regular intervals to the rest of the teams. The event culminated with final presentations in front of a panel of experts.
Working on the premise that ‘ecodesign is good design and good business practice’ and ‘effective ecodesign requires joined-up multi-stakeholder approaches’ Simon set the context while Frank followed with a number of provocations to focus participants on the task ahead.
Along with being an excellent arena for networking, the main objective was to generate research ideas and create collaborative research platforms (between academia, industry, intermediaries and the community) to take the ideas forward in the coming years.
Frank and Simon’s multi-disciplinary ‘brown’ team set out to understand how the Irish design community could take the lead in ‘mainstreaming’ ecodesign. This resulted in a number of interesting outcomes and ideas for moving the agenda forward, focusing initially on the area of inner-Dublin where NCAD is located. The team also chose an alternative way of presenting back to the panel, with Frank taking the role of chair, and each of the team members individually presenting their particular area of interest or passion within the context of their overall shared vision.
Full details of the event can be found here along with some video clips of the presentations.
