Engineering and Product Design Education Conference 09

EDC will present a paper title ‘Capacity for Sustainability: The changing contexts of design education’ at the forthcoming 11th International Conference on Engineering and Product Design Education taking place on 10th-11th September 2009 in Brighton. This conference will bring together representatives from education and industry to explore opportunities for developing new approaches and directions in design education.

According to the conference website “The conference will provide a forum for educators and researchers from product development, engineering and industrial design, together with industry and government representatives to discuss current educational issues and to identify new approaches, new challenges and new directions for development. This is reflected in this year's conference theme, ‘Creating a Better World'.

‘Creating a Better World’ is intended to reflect the increasing emphasis on design in commerce and in education, and in particular the importance of design in addressing such issues as sustainability, old-age and inclusiveness, etc. We encourage varied interpretations of the phrase ‘better world’ – for example from the point of view of different organisations, disciplines, cultures and communities.”

The paper to be presented by EDC explores the context of capacity building for sustainable development as it relates to design practice and education. It builds upon a previous paper by the authors which addressed the broad challenges to capacity building in design education. Based on these theoretical and empirical insights the paper will propose a conceptual framework of key competencies for ecodesign education.
